Cox Furniture Store
Gainesville's Largest Historic Furniture Store
In 1939 furniture store owner Daniel R. Cox bought the land for his new Gainesville location after a 1938 fire destroyed its original building. Now in possession of the largest furniture store in the city, Cox hired architect Sanford Coin to renovate the building, removing the theater that occupied the second and third floors and reinforcing the structure with steel beams. Cox's business was so successful that he also opened locations in Ocala, Cross City, Lake City, Orlando and Tallahassee.
The building was originally constructed in 1890, and housed the Simonson Opera House, Edwards Opera House, and New Baird Theater before the Cox Furniture Store opened. Though the store closed in 1991, the building was added to the National Register in 1993, and its iconic brick exterior remains much the same as it did when the store originally opened.
